A $2.1 million recycling upgrade is planned for Columbia County.

The sorting operation at the County Recycling Center is slated to receive a $2.1 million update. The renovations are expected to make the facility profitable, according to officials. Greg Kaminski, the director of solid waste, spoke during the county board meeting. He updated the department on facility renovations and concerns, such as deteriorating conditions at the transfer site and personnel difficulties at the recycling centre.

The renovations, Kaminski told county officials, will make the facility more efficient and cut labour expenses.New feeding conveyors, automatic separators and sorters, and a new OCC screen will be installed at the plant, which will automatically sort cardboard out of recycling heaps. Other project expenditures include building and flooring renovations, as well as starting and training fees.

In an interview, Kaminski stated that he believes the renovations would assist the facility in becoming profitable. The recycling facility was meant to be self-funded, but it hasn’t been able to do so in its first few years of operation. The recycling factory can handle four tonnes of material per hour, but Kaminski claims that after the modifications, it will be able to process eight tonnes per hour.
