ISRI’s Testimony Highlights Recycling’s Critical Role in a Truly Circular Economy

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) testified today before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on “The Circular Economy as a Concept for Creating a More Sustainable Future.”

Billy Johnson, ISRI’s Chief Lobbyist, discussed the industry’s critical role in a circular economy. Johnson discussed how the recycling business is intertwined and what makes for successful recycling. He also talked about policy options including boosting domestic recycling and market growth, education financing, and recycling design.

First and foremost, successful recycling requires market demand, whether it is domestic, industrial, or commercial. …

Second, because recyclables are sold by specification grade, their worth and marketability are closely connected to their quality, successful recycling needs minimum contamination.

Third, the recycling infrastructure in the United States affects nearly every aspect of our economy…

Fourth, products must be designed to be easily recycled at the end of their useful lives for recycling to be effective. …
